TPO or Torchdown?

TPO or Torchdown?

Every contractor will have their own opinion about which flat roofing material is the best, at AllPro Roofing, we only care about which flat roofing material is the best for you!

EPDM Rubber, Modified Bitumen (ModBit) and TPO are the 3 most widely used flat roofing materials in the industry today. In this article, we will break down what each material is made of and some of their benefits. Remember it is important to hire a certified and licensed roofing contractor for their industry expertise, but it is equally important to be informed yourself to avoid any red flags that could cost you thousands.

TPO – Thermoplastic Polyolefin or TPO, is a blend of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber that form a single ply waterproof membrane. TPO is available in white and custom colours, white will help reflect sunlight away from your roof or commercial building and reduce energy costs. With proper insulation, TPO is a great way to regulate utilities throughout the year.

EPDM – Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer or EPDM is a synthetic rubber derived from a combination of natural gas and oil. When ethylene propylene is combined with diene they form a durable, water-resistant and flexible rubber membrane. Cured EPDM is used in sheets to cover and protect the roof, and the semi-solid non vulcanized EPDM is applied to flashing and tight areas to complete the waterproof system. EPDM is black which can help absorb heat in the wintertime reducing the cost of heating your home, garage or commercial property.

Modified Bitumen (ModBit) – What began as asphalt roofing has evolved into the more durable Modified Bitumen roof. A combination of asphalt, rubber modifiers and solvents produces a strong rubber membrane that is applied with the torch down method. Torchdown means melting seams to create a strong bond between them. A major drawback of Modified Bitumen or a ModBit roof is that torchdown application is dangerous and requires extra safety measures to be taken during installation. Higher labour and insurance costs are why more and more people are switching from ModBit to TPO installations.
