Standing seam metal roofs are named for their visibly raised, mechanically locked seams. A standing seam metal roof is highly customizable to fit any size or style of home. Available in a wide range of colours, the three most popular materials for metal roofs are; Coated Steel, Copper and Zinc Coated Alloy, each material with its own unique benefits and a 50+ year expected life span.

Can my new roof be installed without removing my old shingles?
We are often asked if it is necessary to remove the existing shingles before installing a new steel roof. We built the table below to help our clients understand the pros and cons of installing strapping and steel roofing over their existing shingle roofs versus removing the existing shingles and starting from the roof deck up.
| Factor | Strapping Over Shingles | Tear-Off + Strapping |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Prep | Strapping levels over curled/uneven shingles, but still leaves old shingles beneath. | Clean deck, strapping sits flat on solid wood for best base. |
| Ventilation & Moisture Control | Air gap improves airflow, but trapped shingles underneath can still hold some heat/moisture. | Maximum airflow and drainage — no shingles to trap heat or moisture. |
| Energy Efficiency | Improved compared to direct install, but shingles still absorb heat under metal. | Best efficiency — air gap plus no heat-retaining shingles below. |
| Noise (rain/hail) | Air gap reduces noise noticeably. | Same benefit — quietest option since only strapping + air gap remain. |
| Flashing & Trim Work | Raised roof height may require trim/gutter adjustments. | Same height adjustments needed, but clean deck makes details easier and neater. |
| Installation Cost | Lower — no tear-off or disposal, just strapping and metal. | Higher — tear-off labour, disposal fees, and strapping on top. |
| Weight on Structure | Shingles + strapping + metal = heaviest load (though usually acceptable). | Only strapping + metal = lighter overall load, best for older structures. |
| Manufacturer Warranty | Sometimes valid, but some warranties exclude installs over shingles. | Always preferred for warranty compliance — clean deck ensures fastening integrity. |
| Longevity of Metal Roof | Good, but hidden shingles can still degrade and affect ventilation over time. | Best longevity — no buried shingles, roof can “breathe” properly. |
| When Best Used | Budget-conscious jobs, shingles not too thick (1–2 layers max) | Long-term solution, older roofs with multiple shingle layers, or when warranty/structural integrity is critical. |
